About
Open Design Review is an independent editorial publication about the choices that make designed things work as they do. It is for curious readers who want to look past surface style and notice use, structure and consequence.
What we cover
We examine objects, interfaces, graphics and spaces: how they are put together, what they ask of people, and what their details communicate. Topics may range from a form’s labels to the layout of a shared room. We focus on design literacy, not professional instructions for high-stakes decisions.
Who it is for
Our readers need not work in design or know its specialist vocabulary. We explain terms when they matter and favour concrete examples over jargon. The aim is to make careful looking available to anyone who uses, encounters or makes choices about designed things.
How we look
We compare alternatives and name trade-offs rather than treating taste as proof. A choice can improve one aspect while complicating another; our writing makes that tension visible. We distinguish observation and interpretation, and avoid claiming that one design works for everyone.
Design choices always have consequences
A polished surface cannot rescue a poor decision. We look at what a design makes easier, harder or more visible, and for whom.
